music magazine evaluation

The Prezi presentation linked above gives a detailed evaluation of what I have achieved while working on my final product.
This presentation addresses the following questions;
  • In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • how does your media product represent particular social groups?
  • what kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
  • who would be the audience for your media product?
  • how did you attract/address your audience?
  • what have you learnt about technologies from the process's of constructing this product?
  • looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt form the progression from it to the full product?

double page spread

I developed my interview by creating more structured answers making the paragraphs almost of consistent size and adding more content such as another question and answer so I could make my text smaller so as to suit the conventions of a traditional music magazine whilst still completing the page.

Also Photoshop enabled me to overcome a problem I had which was cutting around the bottom of her hair it had to be cut our and using the repeat and blur tools I was able to create new hair to fill the space as if real, although I still believe I could have done this better.

My interview as conducted with my artist Chyna Liu I highlighted sentences which were potentially great pull quotes.

Music magazine – interview
1.       Chyna we know you currently on your London tour and your living your dream but is there anything else you’ve ever wanted to do or try?
Well I have never been on a cruise before and I missed a chance when some of my relatives took a holiday on one because I was on a tour. But I don’t regret it at all because nothing compares to being on stage.
2.       We always see you singing or doing interviews so what do you do in your spare time?
Well I love spending time with my family and seeing my crazy friends were not the partying people although were always out somewhere, either just or hanging out travelling the city or in our favourite park, usually with our roller blades although I’m terrible on anything with wheels.  If not with friends I’m usually quite reserved, so I try to keep up with the releases of my favourite Japanese manga books.
3.       Are there any artists you want to collaborate with in the future?
Defiantly! I’m quite embarrassed actually because I’ve been an absolute crazy fan of Khalil Fong for years his music has always touched my heart and I’d like to consider him my inspiration
4.       One of your songs is called ‘love paradise’, is there any love on the horizon for you Chyna?
Well I don’t think so, there’s no mystery man I’m too career driven, I’m so in love with music no one can compare.
5.       On ‘this morning’ you hinted there you have a chance of being in a movie. What’s the story?
I really shouldn’t say but I will tell you have been approached by the makers of Taiwanese drama ‘fated to love you’. It’s all very secretive right now but they really wanted me to get involved with their new ideas.
6.       Now you have met and even hung out with Taiwanese boy band Fahrenheit when you sung in their new York tour so tell us are the boys really as relaxed as they seem?
They are very laid back and most of the time they just want to enjoy a laugh but when it comes to business they can be so professional. They are just really great musicians to work and hang out with.
7.       Tell us Brits what it was like for you growing up in the republic china and Los Angeles
I love being in Taiwan. I don’t know how to describe it ‘cause its home for me and where my fascination with music through Mandopop began. Taiwan is where I’m most comfortable whereas LA was whole new experience when I moved it made me want to share my music, so my experiences and the people I’ve met make me who I am today.
8.       Many readers of Yinyue music magazine wrote in wanting to know what made you start to make music.
I was always singing as a child my family said I would sing for ages wanting to entertain them. And as I grew up I began to write lyrics and took an interest in instruments so I guess I’ve always been drawn to music. Growing up in a mandarin speaking country I noticed the popularity of English spoken music in china and Taiwan and I wanted Mandopop to have the same impact on the west this urged me on further into an international music career.
9.       And lastly to end on a happy note; could you name a childhood memory you are very fond of.
That’s difficult. I don’t think I can decide between; my high school leaving dance, which was very emotional and memorable or my first concert which was in Beijing. The band was Cantonese ‘beyond’ who I loved when going through my rock phase.

This segment is supposed to be less formal and more fun keeping my young audience enjoying the article.

contents page development

My teacher pointed out that having the text on the right slanted although I may have liked it did not fit the conventions of a UK music magazine.
I also found the background colour too overwhelming and I realised the background did not have to be consistent with the covers's to follow the colour scheme.

cover page development

This was my original colour scheme, I changed it when my teacher made me notice the colours were very dull in comparison to that of my genre. Because of this I looked at more K-pop, J-pop and Mandopop magazine colour schemes and decided to use brighter more bold shades of the colours I had. Another factor contributing to the new boldness of my text would be a range of drop shadows which made the title stand out.

It is evident that this background did not suit the cover page and I had difficulty deciding on a bright background that would not create a clash.During the first stages of my cover i focused on the main image, I found its placement crucial to the conventions of a music magazine. In order for the image not to look like a student magazine I needed to let the guitar dominate the image but I made the artist the focus by having my text here also just beneath her face.
looking at my final cover compared to my previous it is clear how I used Photoshop to clean cut and trim down my artists hair and neaten the image

text fonts and colours

I decided on this font for my text as it is bold like most POP magazines use, yet the stripes make my magazines text stand out from the rest.

This is the range of fonts which I will use throughout my magazine, most are bold in a POP fashion yet the thinner style for the Chinese font emphasises the oriental aspect of the magazine.
These are the colours which will make up my magazine's colour scheme, the lightness and amount of them is consistent with the conventions of POP magazines and oriental POP music.

The text for my title I wish to be arranged in a fun way such as I have shown above the contrasting colours make the different sections of the title stand out instead of meshing together making it boring to read.
